Here again is an example of how important your personal information is. Identity Theft is growing at such a rapid rate and consumers information is so readily available it is to the point of being obsene. So why would anyone want to put their information in cyber space on a daily basis. This makes no sense at all. The ad on the first page of this site is deceptive.
I have broken it down into 3 segents and will reproduce it here
The first "thumb" shows the entire ad that is placed on the web. Notice that what is predominate is the "GET ALL 3 FOR FREE" button. This is a great example of "divirsionary advertising"
(consult your CD)
The color and the size of the "get all 3 for free" button is the first thing that your mind will register. Note the wording just above the "button".
It states "ConsumerINFO.com and Credit CHECKTOTAL are not affiliated with the annual free credit report program. Under a new Federal Law you have the right to receive a free cop of your credit report once every 12 months from each of the three Nation wide consumer reporting companies. To request your free annnual report under that law you must go t www. annual credit report. com.
Now this is fine and dandy. At least it's not sneak wrap. What is troubling is the message that is above and below the free button. It reads as follows .
Above the FREE button it states:listed under Important Information : When you order your free report here, you will begin your free trial membership in CREDIT CHECKTOTAL. If you don't cancell your membership within the 7 day trial period you will be billed $29.95 for each month that you continue your membership.
Below the FREE button it states: It may take 2-3 weeks for you to be eenrolled in the credit monitor program across all 3 companies and before you begin receiving alerts.
What this sounds like to me is that once enrolled, if you decide to cancell there may not be any record of your account for 21 days. You only have 7 days to cancell. Go figure. Not only that, they have your credit card information and will bill you for a minimum of one months service whether you use the service or not.
